Kommentarer: Av alla band som mina vänner har svårast för att förstå skulle nog Magma ligga högst upp på listan. Franska Magma är Christian Vanders projekt, ett projekt som går djupt, djupt in i Vanders fantastiska och underliga hjärna och själ. Magma har alltid varit ett konstigt band, redan från start. 

Många musiker har kommit och gått i Magma. Upp emot 100 medlemmar har varit med sedan starten 1970. 

Magma har ett eget språk(Kobaïa) samt även gett namn till det soundet de skapade(Zeuhl). Hur låter det då? Vilt, progressivt, kaosigt, expressivt, komplext, vackert och lekfullt. Underbart med andra ord. Varsågoda! Här kommer Magmas bästa låtar:

1. Låt: De Futura

"When I created it, I never thought of a bird. I had an idea inside about a symbol or emblem, and just wrote it down on a piece of paper, sketched it. The idea at the beginning was something like the dress of the Egyptians. It was supposed to be like a piece of cloth or articulated metal sheets that would mold over the body, over the ribcage. Kommentar: Under 20 år var Magma tyst. 2004 exploderade de med återkomstplattan K.a (Köhntarkösz Anteria). Stärkta av unga, skickliga och hungriga musiker skapar de tillsammans ett av Magmas allra bästa album.

K.A. which is an abbreviation for Köhntarkösz Anteria" is actually a prequel to the 1974 album "Köhntarkösz" which together forms a trilogy finally realized with the 2009 closer "Ëmëhntëhtt-Ré."

Kommentar: "Unquestionably one of the best "comeback" albums ever to be recorded. Its status as a "comeback" album is questionable as the song was originally written back in 1973, but it sounds better here than it did in concert back then (I have a bootleg or two), and the current Magma lineup are, IMO, not only better in concert than they were in the '70s, but hold up excellently in the studio as well." -rushomancy

Kommentar: ""K.A III" is the best individual song Magma has ever recorded, and it is one of the crown jewels of progressive rock. It's a combination of two older pieces, "Om Zanka" and "Gamma Anteria", both of which appear on live recordings.

The "Om Zanka" portion of Part III opens with an emphatic chord, followed by a tense, palm-muted guitar line. A warm, serpentine synth line quietly wriggles into place, supported by electric piano and light percussion. There's a rolling, meditative quality to this passage, including distant, moaned vocals. Once the vocals give way, an extended synth solo takes the lead. Vander's percussion keeps building in intensity under the other band members' relatively mellow parts. As the solo progresses, the vocals re-enter, more intense and frenzied than before.

The shift to the "Gamma Anteria" section is sudden but not jarring. Chanting vocals are again the focus over the tight, complex rhythms and riffs laid down by the instruments. Vander's drumming pushes the band harder and harder throughout this massive track's runtime; the steady pace and duration of the acceleration is impressive.

As the song enters its final five minutes, the song reaches new heights. Vander's powerful drumming, the sublime vocal arrangements, and tight interplay between bass, guitar, and piano accelerate this song into ecstatic realms. The repeated chants of "Allëhlüïa!" emphasize the ritualistic, esoteric nature of the music. Kommentar: Oldfield spelade in sitt förstlingsverk Tubular Bells 1973 vägg-i-vägg med Magma i England och Christian Vander menade att Oldfield snodde inledninsteamet (ni vet piano-introt på TB) från Magma. Vilket Vander upptäckte när han såg filmen Exorcisten där Oldfields musik är med (just det temat), vilket gjorde att Vander fick ändra en komposition han höll på med av samma typ (av rädsla för att bli stämd) och i stället skriva Köhntarkösz. -symboliste

Ëmëhntëhtt-Ré II är bland det bästa Magma har spelat in i studio...
Jag fuskade lite här eftersom Ëmëhntëhtt-Ré I-IV är den avslutande delen i Köhntarkösz-triologin.

• The song "Ëmëhntëhtt-Ré I" combines "Ëmëhntëht-Rê (Announcement)" from the album Live/Hhaï (1975) and "Rindë (Eastern Song)" from the album Attahk (1978).
• The song "Ëmëhntëhtt-Ré II" combines "Ëmëhntëht-Rê (Extrait n' deux)" (released on the 1988 CD of Üdü Ẁüdü), "Hhaï" from the album Live/Hhaï (1975), and "Zombies (Ghost Dance)" from Üdü Ẁüdü.

Magmas första platta är fullständigt superb. Att bara välja tre "låtar" är i princip omöjligt. Jag kunde valt vilka låtar som helst egentligen och helst ska Magmas debutskiva avnjutas i sin helhet.
"Zeuhl is among the strangest of progressive rock's subgenres, and it is one of the few musical movements to be able to trace its origin definitively to one act. Most of Magma's music is sung in the invented language Kobaïan, designed by drummer, composer, and occasional vocalist and pianist Christian Vander. The word "zeuhl" itself means "celestial" or "celestial music" in Kobaïan, and it certainly lives up to its name. Kommentar: Christian Vander skapade ett eget språk för att göra soundet komplett. Det är en blandning mellan olika slaviska, germanska språk och esperanto.

"Magma tells a story of the Earth's enlightened, intellectual elite deciding to escape their planet in search of a new world to create a better civilization, far from their home, destroyed by wars and politics. They finally settle on the planet Kobaïa."

Kommentar: hypnotic, female vocalist, repetitive, surreal, atmospheric, passionate, suspenseful, male vocalist, heavy, playful, progressive, science fiction, lush, dense, rhythmic, complex, technical, melodic, polyphonic, epic, avant-garde -rateyourmusic. Kunde inte ha sagt det bättre själv.  

Kommentar: "no other musician had a bigger impact on him than Coltrane. With his obsession growing, the young man started regarding the musician almost as a god, a prophet or his father, more so, because Vander never met his biological parent. When the jazzman passed away in 1967, out of depression, Vander went on tour to Italy. "I arrived in Milan and I did everything I could to destroy myself. Took stuff, drank... And I was like that for nearly two years. But one morning in Turin I woke up and saw the town completely illuminated, like I'd never seen before. And I said to myself: John Coltrane didn't allow himself to die like this." He left, returned to Paris, and became more involved with musical groups, playing around local casinos. Kommentar: Magma är ett fantastiskt studioband, men ändå inte i närheten så bra som Magma är live. Jösses vilken jäkla kanonplatta detta är. Bara dunderhit efter jäkla dunderhit. Nä, inte på det viset, men du hajar vad jag pratar om. Hur kan jag undvika att inte ta med alla åtta låtar?

"First your toe starts quivering. It begins to tap followed by your whole foot, then the other foot. Then your hands start tapping on your knees. Then you uncontrollably rise to your feet and your lower body begins to gyrate. Then your upper body joins in and you begin to dance as if you are being deep-fried.

Your uncontrollable dancing body shimmies out of the house and up the street. The neighbours join you in a long gyrating snake line as you all bump and grind your way towards the waiting UFO.

Christian Vander proves he is one of the best drummers in prog (too often forgotten in drum polls), and the bass is a real monster (only the bass of Nic Potter on VdGG's live album "Vital" is a competition for it). 7 minuter in på Köhntark (Part 2) exploderar världsaltet. Jösses vilket musicerande! Didier Lockwood härskar på violin, sin unga ålder till trots (17 år). Ljudet är helt makalöst dessutom. Börja här om du är nyfiken på Magma!

Kommentar: Morgan Ågren lirar trummor. Christian Vander koncentrerar sig på sången. Plattan inleder starkt med Ẁöhm dëhm Zeuhl Stadium (Hymne au néant). Spoken Word är nog det enklaste sättet att beskriva de två nästkommande låtarna på Zëss : le jour du néant. The City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra härskar på Štreüm Ündets Ẁëhëm (Pont de l'en-delà). En ganska annorlunda platta med Magma.

Kommentar: Trippel-livealbum från 1976 som klockar in på 161 minuter. Magma bjussar på en göttig 25-minutare i De Futura och ett 27-minuters trumsolo(ish) och skrammelfest i Sons et chorus de batterie. De är de två kortaste låtarna på detta monster till live-album. Vi bjuds även på Köhntarkösz (33:32), Theusz Hamtaahk (33:34) och Mekanïk Destruktïẁ Kommandöh (42:00).

Kommentar: Vokal liveplatta efter att Christian Vander brytit upp från bandet Offering. Tre Magmalåtar bjuds vi på samt C'est pour nous av Offering. Bra givetvis, men kanske inget för nybörjaren.

Kommentar: Är detta månne Magmas allra bästa platta? Nja, inte riktigt, men bitvis superbt, brukligt när vi snackar Magma och framförallt när det är live. Från 1981 med Yvon Guillard, Alan Guillard, Benoit Widemann, Jean-Luc Chevalier, Guy Khalifa, Dominique Bertram, Doudou Weiss och Lisa Deluxe. Mäktiga, närmast kommersiella liveversioner av Hhaï, Retrovision (Attahk), Zëss (extrait). Urgön Gorgo måste också nämnas. Otis Redding-hyllningen Otis är kanske inget för nubörjaren.

"Benoit Widemann is on keys here and blows the socks off the keyboardists on other recent albums. It also has the advantage of the awesome Guillard brothers on horns, who are absolute heroes on this whole album

..."Retrovision" is the best version ever. The Guillards make a huge difference to the atmosphere, providing awesome tension and release during the guitar solos. The band rips into the last few sections like their life depends on it. We're talking "MDK" levels of epic... -Mitch_NZ

Vi bjuds på en glad och smittande bra version av Retrovision, en något avkortad Mëkanïk Dëstruktïẁ Kömmandöh (tack vare att de plockat bort en del solon), men framförallt två låtar vi sällan får höra live nämligen The Last Seven Minutes och Ürgon Gorgo.

Kommentar: A soundboard recording. Konsert från 1975 som endast är för de mest inbitna fansen trots att musiken är brilljant. Låtarna är samma som på andra liveplattor, men här hamnar vi väldigt nära Magma. Det känns som att man ser Magma på en liten klubb och att man står längst fram där ljudet kanske inte är det bästa. Vi bjuds på tre låtar. Köntarkösz, Hhaï och Kobaïa. Kanon givetvis! Magma är en best live.

Kommentar: Magma är omöjliga eftersom de har så sablarns långa låtar att det bli omöjligt att välja en låt bara en gång eftersom de live-skiva efter live-skiva väljer att spela samma låtar hela tiden. Som tur var låter det inte likadant. Dessutom får ni bara lyssna på mer episkt musik, om än det är "samma titlar".

Kommentar: "The song being a few months from being recorded, it was currently in the song's formative stage. It has Om Zanka right after the intro, removed for the album but later returned for K.A. III. Everyone plays phenomenally well, especially the organ solo 16 minutes in, played by Gérard Bikialo. After the face melting solo, the last 4 minutes of the song is where it really shines. An amazing groove with the Clavinet and bass matching, the drums soloing, for the first 2 minutes, then the Fender Rhodes explodes into the front and everyone is doing their own thing, the drums calm down into a stable beat following the groove. Klaus chants Allëhluïa as the band winds up for its final few bars then stops on a dime." -Wane34565
