Kommentar:

Ds

1. Låt: Going, Going, Gone
Skiva:
Planet Waves
Årtal: 1974
Kommentar:

"Going, Going, Gone", Forever Young, Tough Mama, Hazel, Something There Is About You. A-sidan är otäckt bra. Bästa i karriären?

"Though Dylan shuns autobiographical ties to his songs, he wrote "Going, Going, Gone" during the eight-year-long recovery from his motorcycle accident in 1966 (during which he could not tour). Most likely this was also around the time his marriage to his first wife was beginning to unravel (they divorced in 1977). As Kristi Hustag explains in her book "What I Wish I'd Known: Finding Your Way Through the Tunnel of Grief," loss comes in other forms than death: the loss of a marriage, the loss of a career, loss of stability, loss of health, or even the loss of innocence that comes from abuse or neglect. Regardless of the loss, the grief is as real for any of these circumstances as it is for the despairing voice in "Going, Going, Gone."" -blogsevenpounds.com

2. Låt: All Along the Watchtower
Skiva:
John Wesley Harding
Årtal: 1967
Kommentar:

"This song is about changing established society, starting in the middle of a conversation between two people (the Joker and the Thief). The Thief sympathizes with the Joker, who wants to escape his position in life and hates the values of society. The third verse suddenly shifts the scene, changing from a conversation to an almost unrelated verse filled with imagery of princes, women, and barefoot servants guarding a castle, establishing a place in the past. These figures are said to represent established society. "Somewhere in the distance, a wildcat does growl" suggests danger is approaching, then suddenly "Two riders are approaching" links us back to the first two verses. The riders are the Joker and the Thief, coming to establish a different set of values. The guarded castle suggests there will be confrontation " -songfacts.com

3. Låt: September of My Years
Skiva:
Triplicate
Årtal: 2017
Kommentar:

September of My Years är bedårande! I Could Have Told You följer och den är också kanon. Once Upon a Time, My One and Only Love m.fl gör den första av tre plattor till väldigt njutbar. Finfin bit. When The World Was Young, It's Funny to Everyone but me och These Foolish Things är också bra låtar.

"But then Bob and his band launch into an intimate, devastating rendition of 'September of My Years' and by Gordon Bennett's crooning cousin Tony they completely floored me." -Mujibean

" Each LP has a different overarching theme: Til the Sun Goes Down, Devil Dolls and Comin' Home Late. The 30 songs on the record once again come from the Great American Songbook. The production and performance is once again top shelf but Dylan has brought in a horn section skillfully arranged by James Harper. The horns add much to the sound. Previous albums were just Dylan's band but with his crack group (George Receli on Drums, Tony Herron on steel guitar, Charlie Sexton on Guitar, Dean Parks on Guitar and long time bassist Tony Garnier) but with the addition of horns it really takes you back to the era that this music was recorded in." -nitsnats

4. Låt: As I Went Out One Morning
Skiva:
John Wesley Harding
Årtal: 1967
Kommentar:

Vem vet?

5. Låt: Ballad of a Thin Man
Skiva:
Highway 61 Revisited
Årtal: 1965
Kommentar:

"He's a real person. You know him, but not by that name...Like I saw him come into the room one night and he looked like a camel. He proceeded to put his eyes in his pocket. I asked this guy who he was and he said, 'That's Mr. Jones.' Then I asked this cat, 'Doesn't he do anything but put his eyes in his pocket?' And he told me, 'He puts his nose on the ground.' It's all there, it's a true story." Bob Dylan

Like a Rolling Stone, Tombstone Blues, Ballad of a Thin Man, Queen Jane Approximately, Desolation Row m.fl. är superba! Bästa plattan hittills även om den bara slår The Times They Are A-Changin' och Blonde on Blonde med en hårsmån.

"Dylan had to push back against Columbia Records to name the album Highway 61 Revisited. Executives didn't initially grasp the significance of the highway, a route deeply rooted in blues history, stretching from Dylan's birthplace in Duluth to the Mississippi Delta. After climbing the chain of command, Dylan eventually got his wish, solidifying the album's connection to the musical and cultural heritage of America." -thatericalper.com

6. Låt: Hurricane
Skiva:
Desire
Årtal: 1976
Kommentar:

Hurricane, Isis, One More Cup of Coffee, Oh, Sister, Joey och Sara kan du låna ett öra till.

"This song is about Rubin "Hurricane" Carter, a boxer who spent 19 years in jail for a murder Dylan felt he did not commit.

Carter's case is complex and filled with legal missteps. On June 17, 1966, three white people were gunned down at a bar in Paterson, New Jersey called the Lafayette Grill. Witnesses described two black men as the murderers; police pulled over Carter and his friend John Artis, who were black, but otherwise didn't fit the description of the killers. They were released, and Carter resumed his boxing career, losing a fight on August 6, but two months later he and Artis were charged with the murders." -songfacts.com

7. Låt: Something There Is About You
Skiva:
Planet Waves
Årtal: 1974
Kommentar:

"One of the finest songs here is also reflective: Something There is About You – lifted by Garth Hudson's organ – is full of mystery, questions and also references his birthplace: "Is it the way your body moves, or is it the way your hair blows free, or is it because you remind me of something that used to be, something that's crossed over . . . rainy days on the Great Lakes, walking in the hills above old Duluth . . . that brings back a long forgotten truth".

Is it about the loss of innocence? His sharp and yearningly soulful tone suggests not as it has an edge of pain etched into the memory." -elsewhere.co.nz

8. Låt: Ballad in Plain D
Skiva:
Another Side of Bob Dylan
Årtal: 1964 Kommentar:

"Bob Dylan hated the title of his fourth album. It wasn't his idea, but rather the brainchild of Tom Wilson, the LP's producer. Dylan felt the title Another Side of Bob Dylan signified a kind of eradication of what he had done in the past, which wasn't at all what he wanted to project." -americansongwriter.com

"This song's about Bob's relationship with Suze Rotolo and how it fell apart. WHAT THE FREAK IS UP WITH THIS GUY BEING SO DAMN GOOD WITH WORDS. I'M MISERABLE. THIS SONG MAKES ME MISERABLE. Anyway, this song recounts conflict between him and Suze's mother and sister. It talks mostly about the night his and Suze's relationship came to an end.

"Beneath a bare lightbulb
The plaster did pound
Her sister and I in a screaming battleground
And she in between, the victim of sound
Soon shattered as a child to the shadows."
This song is pretty bitter and makes me cry. I can't. LOOK AT THIS.
"I once loved a girl, her skin, it was bronze
With the innocence of a lamb, she was gentle like a fawn
I courted her proudly, but now she is gone
Gone as the season she's taken."
WHY. WHY. WHY. WHY. PLEASE." -snufriken

9. Låt: Boots of Spanish Leather
Skiva:
The Times They Are A-Changin'
Årtal: 1964
Kommentar:

"This bittersweet ballad takes the form of a dialogue between two lovers. One of them, the woman, goes away on a long journey across the sea and during the first six verses the pair go back and forth as she warns him she "might be gone a long old time." The last three are all spoken by the man who has been left behind and is slowly witnessing the relationship crumbling before him. When, she writes him a letter saying she may never come back, he requests a gift that would be something to remember his love by - "Spanish boots of Spanish leather." -songfacts.com

"Flera av låtarna är till en början något hårdsmälta. Men dessa förtätade alster är både tunga och lyriska med samhällskritiska bottnar.

Det världspolitiska temat som bland annat utgjordes av "A Hard Rain's A-Gonna Fall" på The Freewheelin' har ett lika starkt motstycke i "With God On Our Side".

Flera av låtarna är dock resultat av sociala orättvisor som Dylan läst om i tidningar eller fått omtalade för sig och sedan skrivit en låt om. Inspirerad av den tyska exilförfattaren Bertolt Brecht kan The Times They Are A-Changin' ses som kulmen för Dylans sociala patos med låtar som "Ballad Of Hollis Brown", "Only A Pawn In Their Game" och "The Lonesome Death Of Hattie Carroll"." -.bobdylan.nu

10. Låt: My Back Pages
Skiva:
Another Side of Bob Dylan
Årtal: 1964
Kommentar:

All I Really Want to Do, Spanish Harlem Incident, Chimes of Freedom, My Back Pages, Ballad in Plain D och It Ain't Me Babe är kanon! Superb platta. En av Dylans bästa!

"Around the time of this album, Dylan started making it very clear that he didn't see himself as part of any political movement, and claimed his songs were never meant to be political. They were about deeper, or at least more ancient things, than the ebb and flow of politics. Or sometimes maybe they were about nothing at all. Either way, Dylan started seriously resisting the efforts to pigeonhole him." -songfacts.com

11. Låt: When the Deal Goes Down
Skiva:
Modern Times
Årtal: 2006
Kommentar:

12. Låt: Not Dark Yet
Skiva:
Time Out of Mind
Årtal: 1997
Kommentar:

"In a New York hotel room, Dylan read Lanois the lyrics and asked him if he had a record. "I said, 'Yes, Bob, I think we've got a record,'" Lanois remembered with a sly laugh during a recent phone call.

Dylan sent Lanois home with a list of reference records to study—Charley Patton, Little Walter, Little Willie John, a mix of ragged blues and primordial rock. "I listened to these records, and I understood," Lanois wrote in his memoir, Soul Mining. "A new birth with the old dogs under your arm, like a stack of classic books." In the end, that rebirth was Time Out of Mind, Dylan's 30th album and one that doesn't sound much like the basic blues at all. Instead, it is an essential post-modern reappraisal of them, an experimental consideration of what could become of the blues' sound and spirit and a mutual communion of articulate, exquisite despair. At the last minute, Lanois took Dylan's blurry snapshot for the cover of Time Out of Mind; on tape, that's exactly how he had captured him." -pitchfork.com

13. Låt: The Times They Are A-Changin'
Skiva:
The Times They Are A-Changin'
Årtal: 1964
Kommentar:

"A call to action, "The Times They Are A-Changin'" became an anthem for frustrated youth. It summed up the anti-establishment feelings of people who would later be known as hippies. Many of the lyrics are based on the Civil Rights movement in the US." -songfacts.com

The Times They Are A-Changin', Ballad of Hollis Brown, With God on Our Side, One Too Many Mornings, North Country Blues, Boots of Spanish Leather, The Lonesome Death of Hattie Carroll och Restless Farewell är kanon. Bäst av Dylans tidiga plattor.

14. Låt: Girl From North County
Skiva: The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan
Årtal: 1963
Kommentar:

"Well, if you're travelin' in the north country fair
Where the winds hit heavy on the borderline
Remember me to one who lives there
She once was a true love of mine"

15. Låt: Memphis Blues Again
Skiva:
Blonde on Blonde
Årtal: 1966
Kommentar:

Both "Like a Rolling Stone" and "Rainy Day Women #12 & 35" reached number 2 on the Billboard charts in 1965 and 1966, respectively, but none of Dylan's own 58 singles have managed to reach the top.

"A few different characters show up in the narrative, starting with "the ragman." Dylan did offer a rare song interpretation when he told Robert Shelton, author of No Direction Home: The Life and Music of Bob Dylan, that the ragman is Satan. Many of Dylan's lyrics are filled with biblical images, but shrouded in inscrutable stories." -songfacts.com

16. Låt: In My Time of Dyin ( org. Blind Willie Johnson)
Skiva:
Bob Dylan
Årtal: 1962
Kommentar:

Av de låtar som står ut märks bland andra: In My Time of Dyin', See That My Grave Is Kept Clean och Song To Woody (som sägs vara den första låt han skrev). I övrigt ingen större favoritplatta för mig.

"Dylan had never sung "In My Time of Dyin'" prior to this recording session. He does not recall where he first heard it. The guitar is fretted with the lipstick holder makeshift slide he borrowed from girlfriend, Suze Rotolo, who sat devotedly and wide-eyed through the recording session." -wiki

17. Låt: Day of the Locusts
Skiva:
New Morning
Årtal: 1970
Kommentar:

"The song title is a reference to the 1939 novel by American author Nathanel West (1903-40), The Day of the Locust. West had worked for a time in Hollywood as a scriptwriter and the book explores the seamy underside of the American movie industry. The novel's title is thought to be a biblical allusion to certain passages in the Old Testament such as in the Book of Joel 2: 25, "I will restore to you the years that the locust hath eaten." -songfacts.com

18. Låt: It's All Over Now, Baby Blue
Skiva:
Bringing It All Back Home
Årtal: 1965
Kommentar:

Låna ett öra till Subterranean Homesick Blues, She Belongs to Me, Maggie's Farm, Love Minus Zero / No Limit, Mr. Tambourine Man, It's Alright, Ma (I'm Only Bleeding) och It's All Over Now, Baby Blue.

19. Låt: Tangled Up In Blue
Skiva:
Blood On The Tracks
Årtal: 1975
Kommentar:

Tangled Up In Blue, Simple Twist of Fate, You're a Big Girl Now, Idiot Wind, Meet Me in the Morning, Shelter From the Storm, Buckets of Rain. Nästan allt är skitbra! Lily, Rosemary and the Jack of Hearts är ingen höjdare och det är synd för den är nästan 9 minuter lång.

"At the Minnesota sessions, the key was changed from G to A at the suggestion of Kevin Odegard, a local singer and guitarist who was brought in to play with Dylan.

Odegard told Artful Living about his contribution to "Tangled Up in Blue."
"The second night, December 30," Odegard said, "we started with 'Tangled Up In Blue.' It was an OK song in G. After we recorded it, we sat there for a minute. Bob lit a cigarette, turned to me and asked, 'What'd you think?' I could tell he felt like something was missing.
By this time, I was comfortable, just like the guys on the steps of the armory. So I turned to him and said, 'It's passable.' He said, 'Passable? What do you mean passable?' And I said, 'Well, I think it would great if we all pitched up a key, from G to A. I think it would have more power, more urgency, more tension.' He looked down for a minute, and my heart kind of stopped. Finally he said, 'Let's try it.'" -songfacts.com

20. Låt: Goin' to Acapulco
Skiva:
The Basement Tapes (1967 - 1975)
Årtal: 1975 Kommentar:

There are worse ways of getting there
And I ain't complainin' none
If the clouds don't drop and the train don't stop
I'm bound to meet the sun

21. Låt: Most of the Time
Skiva:
Oh Mercy
Årtal: 1989
Kommentar:

Most of the time
I'm halfway content
Most of the time
I know exactly where it went
I don't cheat on myself, I don't run and hide
Hide from the feelings that are buried inside
I don't compromise and I don't pretend
I don't even care if I ever see her again
Most of the time

22. Låt: Lone Pilgrim
Skiva:
World Gone Wrong
Årtal: 1993
Kommentar:

"LONE PILGRIM is from an old Doc Watson record. what attracts me to the song is how the lunacy of trying to fool the self is set aside at some given point. salvation & the needs of mankind are prominent & hegemony takes a breathing spell. "my soul flew to mansions on high" what's essentially true is virtual reality. technology to wipe out truth is now available. not everybody can afford it but it's available. when the cost comes down look out! there wont be songs like these anymore. factually there aren't any now.

by the way, don't be bewildered by the Never Ending Tour chatter. there was a Never Ending Tour but it ended in '91 with the departure of guitarist G.E. Smith. that one's long gone but there have been many others since then. The Money Never Runs Out Tour (fall of '91) Southern Sympathizer Tour (early '92) Why Do You Look At Me So Strangley Tour (European '92) The One Sad Cry of Pity Tour (Australia & West Coast America '92) Principles Of Action Tour (Mexico -- South American '92) Outburst Of Consciousness Tour ('92) Don't Let Your Deal Go Down Tour('93) & others too many to mention each with their own character & design. to know which was which consult the playlists."
-Bob Dylan

23. Låt: Don't Think Twice, It's All Right
Skiva:
The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan
Årtal: 1963
Kommentar:

Girl From North County, Masters of War, A Hard Rain's A-Gonna Fall, Don't Think Twice, It's All Right är kanon.

Innan Robert Zimmerman blev Bob Dylan gick han under artistnamnet Elston Gunnn. Tedham Porterhous, Blind Boy Grunt, Robert Milkwood Thomas, Boo Wilbury, Sergei Petrov och Jack Frost är andra namn Robert arbetat under.

Ps. Visst fasen är gitarren ostämd på Bob Dylans Dream, Down the Highway m.fl. ? Ds.

24. Låt: Sara
Skiva:
Desire
Årtal: 1976
Kommentar:

"This was one of Dylan's most public displays of affection for his then-wife, Sara, who he married in 1965. At the time of writing, the couple were on the brink of divorce, and this was Dylan's attempt at reconciling with his "radiant jewel, mystical wife." Despite the attempts to make amends, Bob and Sara would ultimately divorce a year later in 1977." -songfacts.com

"You could have heard a pin drop. She was absolutely stunned by it."

25. Låt: Every Grain of Sand
Skiva:
Shot of Love
Årtal: 1981
Kommentar:

"I need a shot of love."

As with Infidels, the problem with Shot Of Love is knowing what was left off it: the way superior likes of "Caribbean Wind", "Angelina", "Need A Woman" and even "You Changed My Life". (Not to mention "The Groom's Still Waiting At The Altar", a B-side added to the album after it received heavy radio play.) Next to that what made the record is fluff. -Bradl

Property of Jesus, The Groom's Still Waiting at the Altar, In the Summertime, men framförallt avslutande Every Grain of Sand är lyssningsbara.

26. Låt: Like a Rolling Stone
Skiva:
Highway 61 Revisited
Årtal: 1965
Kommentar:

"Al Kooper, primarily a guitarist, was invited to the recording session as a spectator. Despite having little experience on the organ, he jumped in and played an improvised riff during "Like a Rolling Stone." Dylan loved Kooper's unexpected contribution, which became a defining feature of the song's sound. The spontaneous organ part is now regarded as one of the most iconic moments in rock history." -thatericalper.com

27. Låt: Workingman's Blues #2
Skiva:
Modern Times
Årtal: 2006
Kommentar:

Modern Times blev Dtlans första #1-album i USA sedan Desire.

28. Låt: Idiot Wind
Skiva: Blood On The Tracks
Årtal: 1975
Kommentar:

Uj, uj, uj, uj, uj, uj.

Someone's got it in for meThey're planting stories in the pressWhoever it is I wish they'd cut it out quickBut when they will I can only guessThey say I shot a man named GrayAnd took his wife to ItalyShe inherited a million bucksAnd when she died it came to meI can't help it if I'm lucky

29. Låt: It's Alright Ma (I'm Only Bleeding)
Skiva:
Bringing It All Back Home
Årtal: 1965
Kommentar:

"Dylan vents about subjects such as commercialism, hypocrisy and warmongering in this song. In the book, Bob Dylan, Performing Artist, author Paul Williams states this song sees Dylan acknowledge "the possibility that the most important (and least articulated) political issue of our times is that we are all being fed a false picture of reality, and it's coming at us from every direction...This song is one of Dylan's personal favorites. In 1980, he stated: "I don't think I could sit down now and write 'It's Alright, Ma' again. I wouldn't even know where to begin, but I can still sing it." -songfacts.com

30. Låt: Tonight I'll Be Staying Here With You
Skiva:
Nashville Skyline
Årtal: 1969
Kommentar:

Dylan goes country. Girl From the North Country startar albumet fint.

I Threw It All Away, "Lay, Lady, Lay", Tonight I'll Be Staying Here With You är bra låtar. Resten mer eller mindre skräp. Dylans sämsta hittills?

"I swear Bob Dylan died in that motorcycle accident and was replaced with someone else because why the fuck does he sound like that on this album..." -sleepwalkcemetary

31. Låt: Slow Train
Skiva:
Slow Train Coming
Årtal: 1979
Kommentar:

Jesus! Slow Train och I Believe in You är ok.

"The glory of the Lord knocked me down and picked me up." -Bob Dylan, 1978

32. Låt: Lily of the West
Skiva:
Dylan
Årtal: 1973
Kommentar:

Inspelad redan 69-70, men släppt först 1973. Bespottad platta, fylld till toppen med utslutande covers, inleds med fantastiska Lily of the West och en finfin cover av Can't Help Falling in Love With You. The Ballad of Ira Hayes, Mr. Bojangles är också bra.

When first I came to Louisville, some pleasure there to find
A damsel there from Lexington was pleasing to my mind
Her rosy cheeks, her ruby lips, like arrows pierced my breast
And the name she bore was Flora, the lily of the West

33. Låt: Mississippi
Skiva:
"Love and Theft"
Årtal: 2001
Kommentar:

"Jag vet inte vad det säger om världen att Bob Dylan tycks ha klivit ur sitt svårgenomträngliga skal och hastigt och lustigt blivit en glad skit. Han dansar med Katie Holmes i videon till »Things Have Changed«, medverkar i TV-komedin Dharma & Greg och ger nu ut en skiva med mysigt gubbgung och obekymrade hyllningar till ändlösa Summer Days." -sonicmagazine.com

34. Låt: Just Like a Woman
Skiva:
Blonde on Blonde
Årtal: 1966
Kommentar:

"I was on drugs, a lot of things. A lot of things just to keep going, you know?" -Bob Dylan

Visions of Johanna, One of Us Must Know (Sooner or Later), I Want You, Memphis Blues Again, Leopard-Skin Pill-Box Hat, Just Like a Woman, Absolutely Sweet Marie, Fourth Time Around, Obviously 5 Believers och Sad Eyed Lady of the Lowlands.

"Rick Danko (bass) and Robbie Robertson (guitar) play on the song "One of Us Must Know (Sooner or Later)" on Blonde on Blonde. The rest of the musicians are studio musicians. Al Kooper plays organ and Paul Griffin plays piano. Levon Helm had not yet rejoined the Hawks when the album was recorded." -theband.hiof.no

"...one of the session players for Blonde on Blonde was a keyboard player named "Pig," who happened to be blind. On a night when the band was drinking and blowing off steam, winding around the streets of Tennessee, they decided to let Pig drive. Pig was doing quite well, supplemented by directions from the passengers, until the Highway Patrol pulled them over." -Al Kooper

35. Låt: Katie's Been Gone
Skiva:
The Basement Tapes (1967 - 1975)
Årtal: 1975
Kommentar:

"The song – in essence, an open letter from an abandoned lover – has long been rumored to be an homage to Karen Dalton, an Oklahoma-born singer and fixture in the Greenwich Village folk scene in New York in the '60s. Somewhat of a cult figure, Dalton came to more prominent light when Dylan name-checked her as one of his favorite singers in Greenwich Village in the book Chronicles, Volume 1." -americansongwriter.com

Kommentar:

"Dylan recorded this in New York City with a talented group of studio musicians including Al Kooper and Charlie Daniels. Ron Cornelius, who played guitar on these sessions, told us that Dylan would play down the song, but as soon as they started recording he would play it in a completely different tempo, which threw off the musicians but forced them to play to their strengths. These sessions lasted about 3 weeks, with the best songs going on this album and many of the others ending up on his 1973 self-titled album Dylan." -songfacts.com

38. Låt: Song To Woody
Skiva:
Bob Dylan
Årtal: 1962
Kommentar:

Dylan avgudar Woody Guthrie. Efter besöket skrev Bob "Song To Woody".

Hey, hey, Woody Guthrie, I wrote you a song
'Bout a funny ol' world that's a-comin' along
Seems sick an' it's hungry, it's tired an' it's torn
It looks like it's a-dyin' an' it's hardly been born

"Zimmerman spent the summer following his graduation from high school working at a busboy at a cafe in Fargo, North Dakota. It was while working there that he managed to talk his way into becoming part of Bobby Vee's band, The Shadows … by claiming that he had just gotten back from touring with Conway Twitty (he hadn't)." -mentalfloss.com

Kommentar:

"En 7-minuters anti-kärnvapenkrigssång. Det var en av de protestlåtar som Dylan spelade in på The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan. Dylan sa att regnet inte var bokstavligt, utan "some sort of end that's just gotta happen."

40. Låt: The Lonesome Death of Hattie Carroll
Skiva:
The Times They Are A-Changin'
Årtal: 1964
Kommentar:

"This song gives the account of the killing of 51-year-old barmaid Hattie Carroll by the wealthy young William Devereux "Billy" Zantzinger and his subsequent sentence of six months in jail. The actual incident took place February 9, 1963 at a ball at the Emerson Hotel in Baltimore, Maryland. Dylan's song accurately implies, but never states, that Carroll was black and Zantzinger is white. The song implies that Zantzinger beat Carroll to death with his cane, when in fact he drunkenly assaulted Carroll and at least two others with the cane (a bellboy and a waiter both also reported being attacked by Zantzinger the same night)." -songfacts.com

41. Låt: Chimes of Freedom
Skiva:
Another Side of Bob Dylan
Årtal: 1964
Kommentar:

"Upon casual listen, the obvious interpretation of the song is that it's about bells or chimes but, as Paul Williams points out in his book Bob Dylan: Performing Artist (The Early Years), a close listen/read reveals that the song is actually about lightning. In the lyrics, Dylan describes ducking into a doorway to escape a storm and, while standing with his unnamed compatriot, having a synesthetic experience in which the flashes of lightning become like flashing bells ringing out for the oppressed everywhere...Heavy speculation ensues that Dylan wrote this in reaction to US president John Kennedy's assassination. Dylan denies this, but then he denies everything the media says about him." -songfacts.com

Skiva:
Oh Mercy
Årtal: 1989
Kommentar:

"What was it you wanted

When you were kissing my cheek?"

"The kiss of Judas, also known as the Betrayal of Christ, is the act with which Judas identified Jesus to the multitude with swords and clubs who had come from the chief priests and elders of the people to arrest him, according to the Synoptic Gospels. The kiss is given by Judas in the Garden of Gethsemane after the Last Supper and leads directly to the arrest of Jesus by the police force of the Sanhedrin."

Kommentar:

Bobban goes electric. Åh nej. Vilken miss. Dessutom uppfann han folkrock med Bringing It All Back Home. Hur tordes han?!

"The first time I played electric before a large group of people was at the Newport Folk Festival, but I had a hit record out, so I don't know how people expected me to do anything different. I was aware that people were fighting in the audience, but I couldn't understand it. I was a little embarrassed by the fuss because it was for the wrong reasons. I mean, you can do some really disgusting things in life, and people will let you get away with it. Then you do something that you don't think is anything more than natural, and people react in that type of riotous way, but I don't pay too much attention to it." -Bob Dylan

44. Låt: Love Sick
Skiva:
Time Out of Mind
Årtal: 1997
Kommentar:

Standing in the Doorway, Tryin' to Get to Heaven, Not Dark Yet, Cold Irons Bound, Make You Feel My Love

"Time Out of Mind is about dealing with life and its itinerant lows, knowing how it will all end, anyway. The blues become an emotional state of being. Through the cobwebs of his beleaguered voice, Dylan musters all the feelings of losing love, full of pride and insanity and lust and violence and humor, implicitly navigating the five stages of grief." -pitchfork.com

45. Låt: Desolation Row
Skiva:
Highway 61 Revisited
Årtal: 1965
Kommentar:

"In Desolation Row, Dylan is warning people that society is heading for destruction, an apocalype, if it continues in its then direction. With the US locked in a deadly embrace with Russia, teetering on a knife-edge of mutually assured nuclear destruction, it was reasonable for people to be concerned (more like scared half to death), but governments of the time characterised anyone who spoke out against the Cold War as unpatriotic, even traitorous." -bobdylancommentaries.com

Kommentar:

The Band guitarist, Robbie Robertson, plays on the song. At the session, Dylan told the producer to temporarily name the song "Five Believers." After the recording was complete, Dylan asked the group what it should be called. Robertson said, sardonically, "Obviously, Five Believers." Dylan said, "that's it".

-Ronald Paul

48. Låt: I Dreamed I Saw St. Augustine
Skiva:
John Wesley Harding
Årtal: 1967
Kommentar:

As I Went Out One Morning, All Along the Watchtower, I Dreamed I Saw St. Augustine är bra låtar.

"At first this appears to be an outlaw ballad about John Wesley Hardin (1853-1895) a Texas sharp-shooter who it is claimed had murdered over 40 people by the time he was sent to prison in 1878. In an interview with Rolling Stone magazine in 1969, Dylan discussed how the song didn't turn out as he originally intended: "I was gonna write a ballad on - like maybe one of those old cowboy - you know, a real long ballad. But in the middle of the second verse, I got tired. I had a tune, and I didn't want to waste the tune, it was a nice little melody, so I just wrote a quick third verse, and I recorded that. I knew people were gonna listen to that song and say that they didn't understand what was going on, but they would've singled that song out later, if we hadn't called the album John Wesley Harding and placed so much importance on that, for people to start wondering about it. If that hadn't been done, that song would've come up and people would have said it was a throw-away song."" -songfacts.com

49. Låt: Come Rain or Come Shine
Skiva:
Fallen Angels
Årtal: 2016
Kommentar:

Come Rain or Come Shine, Melancholy Mood, Nevertheless och Maybe You'll Be There är en fin fortsättning på Dylans försök att vara Frank Sinatra (Shadows in the Night pt2).

Infidels
Årtal: 1983
Kommentar:

51. Låt: Tough Mama
Skiva:
Planet Waves
Årtal: 1974
Kommentar:

"Throughout Planet Waves – recorded in three days with the Band – Dylan looks at love and relationships from various angles (as he would do to better effect on Blood on the Tracks) and at the time it was recorded, late '73 in LA, his marriage to Sara was strained.

They had sold their Woodstock house and were building a sprawling and shapeless mansion – 20 rooms – north of Malibu. It became a source of tension according to those around them. Within six months the marriage was over.

So across Planet Waves – written and recorded before the final breakdown – we hear him vacillating between pure love alongside farewell messages and vague signals abut past and future infidelities.

Some writers – among them Michael Roos and Don Omeara writing in '87 – also read the lyrics as being about Dylan's ambivalence in returning to live performance and the road: "Is he singing to his wife or to his audience?" they asked.

The answer to that and other such questions ("Is he celebrating domestic life or rejecting it?") they concluded was "Both"." -elsewhere.co.nz

53. Låt: I Threw It All Away
Skiva:
Nashville Skyline
Årtal: 1969
Kommentar:

"In November 1968, George Harrison of The Beatles visited Bob Dylan's house in Woodstock, New York. The visit eventually produced Harrison's "I'd Have You Anytime." As the two were first warming to each other and working themselves out of self-doubt stemming from downturns in their lives, Dylan sang an early version of "I Threw It All Away." Harrison recounted that Dylan seemed nervous and that he was aware that most people would consider his new work lightweight compared to the politically and spiritually charged surrealism that had made him iconic, but Harrison loved the song from the start. He was already internally breaking away from The Beatles and appreciated seeing Dylan's courage to go his own way and sing about what mattered to him." -songfacts.com

Skiva:
Self Portrait
Årtal: 1970
Kommentar:

Ladididi, liksom.

I Forgot More Than You'll Ever Know, Days of 49Early Morning Rain, Let It Be Me, Belle Isle, Take a Message to Mary, It Hurts Me Too, Alberta #2 är lyssningsbara låtar.

Undvik: All The Tired Horses,  Little Sadie, Blue Moon, The Boxer, Like a Rolling Stone osv.

"This man wrote "All Along the Watchtower" two albums ago, and here we are now on Self Portrait recycling Alberta covers. It's wild." -thebestmark

"Days Of 49″ is an old-time ballad from the California Gold Rush days. Some scholars have suggested that it was written by minstrel singer Charles Bensell or vaudevillian Charley Rhoades. The first recording and indeed the first release was by Jules Allen "The Singing Cowboy" in 1928. -bob-dylan.org.uk

"When asked what his songs were about, in a 1966 interview with Playboy magazine, Dylan quipped: "Some are about four minutes, some are about five, and some, believe it or not, are about eleven or twelve." -bbc.com

Skiva:

Årtal: 1973
Kommentar:

"Walker said he was inspired to write the song after an encounter with a street performer in a New Orleans jail. While in jail for public intoxication in 1965, he met a homeless man who called himself "Mr. Bojangles" to conceal his true identity from the police. Mr. Bojangles had been arrested as part of a police sweep of indigent people that was carried out following a high-profile murder. The two men and others in the cell chatted about all manner of things, but when Mr. Bojangles told a story about his performing dog who was killed by a car, the mood in the room turned heavy. Someone else in the cell asked for something to lighten the mood, and Mr. Bojangles obliged with a tap dance.[2][3] The homeless "Mr. Bojangles", who was white, had taken his pseudonym from Bill "Bojangles" Robinson (1878–1949), a black entertainer."

The Night We Called It a Day, Autumn Leaves(alltid bra) och That Lucky Old Sun förtjänar ett eller två Sinatragillande öron.

Ge ett öra till Million Dollar Bash, Yazoo Street Scandal, Goin' to Acapulco, Katie's Been Gone, Bessie Smith, You Ain't Goin' Nowhere, Ain't No More Cane, Ruben Remus, Nothing Was Delivered, "Open the Door, Homer", Long Distance Operator och This Wheel's on Fire

"The best songs are the songs you write that you don't know anything about. They're an escape. I don't do too much of that because maybe it's more important to deal with what's happening rather than to put yourself in a place where all you can do is imagine something. Skiva:
Time Out of Mind
Årtal: 1997
Kommentar:

Make You Feel My Love har coverats(stavning?) av Adele, Michael Bolton, Neil Diamond, Garth Brooks, Pink m.fl.

"The next year was a reminder of what Dylan said he despised about making records—extended seaside sessions on the Atlantic and the Pacific, guitars smashed in anger, a militia of Nashville crackerjacks and world-class session players who had to be told more than once to play a lot less. Lanois and Dylan fought like hell in the parking lot of the Miami studio where they recorded, but after more than half a year and many mixes, overdubs, and lyrical revisions, Time Out of Mind—11 songs that would transform Dylan from seemingly obsolete icon to wise, wizened visionary almost overnight—was finished. And then Dylan nearly died.

Four months before Time Out of Mind arrived and just days after his 56th birthday, Dylan was admitted into a Los Angeles hospital after persistent chest pains that suggested a heart attack. Instead, acute pulmonary histoplasmosis—a nasty fungal infection caused by bird-and-bat feces in the country's most fertile river valleys—had inflamed the covering around his heart and nearly killed him. "I really thought I'd be seeing Elvis soon," he said later." -pitchfork.com

"Saved är en fortsättning på den kristna hållning som upprättades på föregående album, Slow Train Coming. Albumet som blandar rock med gospel dras med dålig produktion.
