Deep Purple-Come taste the band (låt för låt)
Efter en växande splittring kring bandets stilbyte mot funk och soul fick gitarristen Ritchie Blackmore nog och drog för att bilda Rainbow. Blackmore var inte den enda som var missnöjd. Jon Lord var inte heller nöjd med att Deep Purple hade tagit ett större steg mot funk och soul. Detsamma gällde basisten/vokalisten Glenn Hughes som blev övertygad av David Bowie att stanna.
"I was the one who probably wanted to leave more than anyone else. It was David Bowie who convinced me to stay. Bowie was staying at my house in Los Angeles, and when I got back from Paris he told me: 'No, you've got to see this out, you've got to find somebody completely different to Blackmore. You've got to go out and discover somebody new.' Otherwise I probably would have gone, if it hadn't been for Bowie." -Glenn Hughes
Sångaren David Coverdale var sugen på att spela in nytt, men inte under namnet Deep Purple. Sen var frågan om vem som skulle spela gitarr. Det föreslogs namn som Jeff Beck och Rory Gallagher. Clem Clemson från Humble Pie gjorde en audition, men de valde att inte ge honom giget. Jobbet skulle istället hamna på Coverdales tredje val (efter Gallagher och Beck).
""When it was official that Ritchie was out, I immediately wanted to make a solo album – and the players I knew I wanted to work on it with me were the rest of Purple. My disappointment was in not changing the band name. I remember the meeting with the remaining band members and management following Ritchie's announcement. I suggested we call ourselves Good Company, Purple or The Deeps. I believed, and still do believe, that without Blackmore – his quirky character, personality, inspiration and influence – it couldn't be Purple. Ritchie was the creative driving force of the band. Come Taste the Band, som släpptes den 10 oktober 1975, är Deep Purples tionde studioalbum. Det är den enda studioplattan med sättningen Mark IV och på gitarr finner vi virtuosen Tommy Bolin. På sång hittar vi David Coverdale och Glenn Hughes.

Inspelningen av Come Taste the Band blev allt annat än simpel. Medlemmarna brottades med diverse substans-problem, Coverdale med att hålla picken innanför byxorna och till slut fick Glenn Hughes fnatt och attackerade crew-medlemmar. De hade inte något val och beslöt sig för att han behövde åka tillbaka till England för att få professionell hjälp med sitt missbruk. Plattan var 80 % klar så Bolin fick spela bas istället.
""I freaked out. I rugby-tacked Nicky Bell in the lobby of the hotel and hit him. I also attacked another member of our crew, Ossy Hoppe, in front of paying customers in a restaurant. The next thing I knew I was on the plane home. The only way they could stop me going crazy was to send me back to England. I was ill and needed to be taken care of by a doctor.
"But it wasn't just me," he adds. "Everybody was gabbling. Other people were having their own problems with their own demons – wine, women, gambling, whatever. They had their own secrets. 1. Comin' Home
Likt in rock börjar Come Taste the Band med klassisk kakofoni innan öppningsspåret Comin' Home drar igång. Bolin driver upp tempot med sitt riviga riff och Coverdales röst är hesare och strävare än tidigare. Ett välkommet grepp till hans (även tidigare) fantastiska röst. Nya gitarristen Tommy Bolin bjuder på en riktigt scorcher till solo. Bolin lirar även bas här då Glenn Hughes var på rehab.

Låten skrevs i studion och den byggde på en låt vid namn "Energy", som Tommy Bolin hade spelat med sitt förra band (därav står Jeff Cook som kompositör), men Coverdale skrev helt ny text eftersom Bolin inte kom ihåg originaltexten. Texten är...Coverdalesk. Låten är mera klassisk boogie-hårdrock med lättsmält refräng.
Ps. Är det bara jag som får chills längs hela ryggen när solot ska börja och Bolins gitarr låter som ett larm? Ds.

3. Getting Tighter
Bolin funkar till det ordentligt här. Hendrix möter Bolin i denna lite fartigare rockern. Glenn Hughes leverar sång i världsklass. Två minuter in bjuds vi på riktig funk. Gissar att många Purple-fans tyckte rätt illa om partiet. Jag gillar det! Getting Tighter blev en live-favorit under den tid som Purple hann med innan Tommy Bolins tragiska bortgång i december 1976.
"Gettin' Tighter is another fast paced rocker that kicks off with a crunching bass note leading into a sweeping, swirling Tommy Bolin riff. Lord drives this track picking up the riff while Bolin takes up position once again as soloist. Hughes lays down a superbly funky bass line but it's vocally where he really proves his worth.

4. Dealer
Bluesigare hårdrock här. Coverdale sjunger ut Glenns frustration kring drogberoende. Glenn sjöng lead på låten, men sångspåret ströks och blev istället en duett mellan Coverdale och Bolin. Återigen hörs det var Bolins inspiration kommer ifrån i det väldigt Hendrixdoftande gitarriffet som leder Coverdale under versen. Riffet har Bolin återanvänt från sin låt Poker Chips. Texten är som sagt tydligt om Glenn Hughes drogberoende.

5. I Need Love
En långsammare semi-ballad skriven av Coverdale och Bolin. Coverdale sjunger ut sin själ i denna funkiga låt. Roger Glovers bas är kraftigt tillskruvad. Även här misstänker jag att de flesta Purplefans tycker att det blir för funkigt.
"I don't think it's a Purple record at all. I have to say that I took very little interest at the time in anything to do with the creative process. Had it not been for David and Glenn and Tommy in particular, I don't think the album would've got made. Glenn, in his lucid moments, was a powerhouse. Tommy seemed to thrive on being stoned. A lot of the groove and the drama were down to Tommy." -Jon Lord
6. Drifter
Bolin glänser igen. Låten skrevs under ett jam, sommaren 1975. Låten är det mera driv i och mera klassiskt bluesig hårdrock. Vi bjuds återigen av fantastiskt gitarrspel av Bolin. Lyssna bara på solot! Coverdale sköter sitt jobb som vanligt och sjunger skitbra här.

7. Love Child
Black Sabbaths Iron Man dyker upp i huvudet när Love Child drar igång. Detta är den tyngsta låten på plattan. Äntligen får vi också lite Jon Lord som bland annat bjuder på ett köttigt solo. Coverdale bjuder på Coverdalesk lyrik igen.

This Time Around är en ballad med soulig vokal av Glenn Hughes. Låten är skriven av Jon Lord och Glenn Hughes. När Jon Lord hyllades på Royal Albert Hall 2014 sjöng Glenn Hughes låten som hyllning till sin avlidne vän. Jon Lord dog den 16:e juli 2012.

It was compiled from a show the band did in Tokyo on 15 December 1975. Perfekt avslutning på en väldigt fin platta. Låten fanns med redan när Burn skulle spelas in 1973, men Ritchie Blackmore ratade den.
