Mastodon bildades år 2000 i Atlanta, Georgia, efter att ha träffats på en High On Fire-konsert, och har snabbt blivit ett av de mest uppfinningsrika och dynamiska banden inom samtida metal. Genom att blanda inslag av progressiv, stoner-rock och sludgemetal, med glimtar av psykedelia, thrash och punk, är deras sound en mycket stiliserad kakofoni som har gett dem höga lovord från både mainstreamrock och underground metal-publik.

The Hunter var den första plattan jag köpte med Mastodon. Black Tongue, Curl of the Burl, Stargasm, All the Heavy Lifting, Octopus Has No Friends, The Hunter, Dry Bone Valley och The Sparrow. Allt är typ bra på denna platta även om den inte kommer upp i Crack The Skye-klass.

Mastodon fick sin första hit med Blood and Thunder. Låten skrevs av Brann Dailor. Texten prövade de sig fram genom lira låten live. På så sätt kunde de se hur publiken reagerade på texten. Neil Fallon från Clutch gästar.
"The Full Metal Jackie interview also sheds light on the band's creative process for Leviathan, including "Blood and Thunder." Dailor reminisced about touring with Clutch before the age of YouTube. Inspired by Neurosis' pre-recording touring routine, Mastodon decided to road-test "Blood and Thunder.""We were on tour with Clutch for about a month and a half," Dailor recalled, "and we didn't have fleshed out lyrics or anything." This meant the song was taking shape live, in front of audiences. Dailor even remembers writing lyrics on the tour bus and handing them to vocalist Troy Sanders between gigs. 8. Låt: March of the Fire Ants

Redan från första ton härskar Brann Dailor med sitt trumspel. Sicket jäkla superproffs till batterist. Crusher Destroyer öppnar albumet och manglar allt i sin väg på sina korta två minuter. March of the Fire Ants och Where Strides the Behemoth tar vid och är Mastodon i ett nötskal. Hårt, progressivt och intensivt. Workhorse är något punkigare och lite mindre progg, men precis lika intensivt och Brann dödar bakom trummorna. Lyssna även till Trilobite, Elephant Man, Mother Puncher och Trainwreck.
"Brann was born on March 19th and claims to be the reincarnation of Randy Rhoads who died March 19th. This is why one of Brann's most popular sets has the Randy Rhoads Polka dots.

Mastodon guitarist Brent Hinds absolutely loves Soundgarden but was unimpressed by singer Chris Cornell. In an interview with Clash, Hinds says he "could listen to Soundgarden all day long" but also says Cornell was a "douche bag" for not talking to him or shaking his hand when he was just trying to say hello.

Shadows That Move, Battle at Sea, Deep Sea Creature, Slickleg och Call of the Mastodon är bra låtar på denna extrema (med Mastodonmått mätt) platta.
This is a compilation of Mastodon's early live material, originally recorded as a demo with vocalist Eric Saner, who left the band in 2001. There's rips of those recordings online if you search hard enough, but they can be difficult to find.

Det är full jäkla fart från första ton och Crusher Destroyer gör precis vad den heter, krossar. Remission är Mastodons första album och producerades av Matt Bayles.

Fun fact:
Mastodon contributed a track titled "White Walker" towards the Game of Thrones: Catch the Throne Vol. 2 mixtape to promote the fifth season of the HBO TV series Game of Thrones. Dailor, Hinds, and Kelliher also appeared in season five's episode "Hardhome," as wildlings who were slaughtered by White Walkers and wights, and then were re-animated into wights themselves.

Mastodon gör det igen. Vilken fantastisk skiva. Mörkret lyser igenom där texterna präglas av alla motgångar som medlemmarna i Mastodon kämpat med personligen under de senaste åren. Som vanligt ligger de någonstans mellan progressive, hårdrock, stoner och metal. Tidigt i karriären var musiken hårdare. Nu tillåts melodierna ligger i fokus och det funkar alldeles utmärkt för mig. Sången blandas som vanligt mellan tre medlemmar i bandet. Många grymma låtar här. "Pain with an Anchor" öppnar plattan superbt, "The Crux" en av favoriterna följer härnäst och sen är det dags för "Sickle and Peace". En fantastisk trio att öppna plattan med! Sedan fortsätter det i samma kvalitet igenom hela skivan. "Teardrinker" är kanske den givna låten att börja med om du inte hört skivan tidigare. Vill du ha det lite hårdare Mastodon kan du lyssna på "Pushing the Tides". Den minsta av dippar följer. Sen kommer bl.a. "Had it all"och "Gobblers of Dregs" två alldeles fantastiska låtar!
