Porcupine Tree-In Absentia (låt för låt)
In Absentia blev starten på en lång och krokig väg för mig där jag jagade ny prog. Spocks Beard, Riverside, Frost, Pure Reason Revolution, Dear Hunter, Mars Volta, Symphony X, Tangent, Fair to Midland, Karnivool, Iq, Kino, Marillion (med Hogarth), Mew m.fl.
Allt skulle in i min lilla hjärna.
"Having made two albums that I thought had quite accessible material on, there was a sense of frustration," says Wilson. "You could argue that Porcupine Tree were always the quintessential cult band. But at this point, I'm thinking, 'We can be more than this.'" -Steven Wilson
1. Blackest Eyes:
Stor favorit här hemma. Älskar det hårda riffet och ingången till den lugna versen. Wilson sjunger fantastiskt. Världens nöjdaste basist Colin Edwin glänser på versen. Bra refräng med perfekt harmoni. Suverän start!
2. Trains
Mången gång har jag försökt bemästra denna lilla trudelutt på ack-guran ihopp om att belägra en dam eller två. För alla damer älskar väl smal prog? Låten är fantastisk på alla sätt och vis. Gavin Harrison dominerar genom att spela smakfullt och avancerat på en ganska enkel låt. Stark låt!
3. Lips of Ashes
Inte den starkaste låten solo, men på plattan passar den in utmärkt.
4. Sound of Muzak
Riffet och det fantastiska trumspelet. Perfektion ut i fingerspetsarna. Fantastisk refräng. 7/4-takten kan ingen ogilla. Väl? Den här låten har allt. Otroligt stark A-sida.

"For years I'd been bemoaning the fact that no one was experimenting in rock music any more," says Wilson. "And of course I was just looking at it through my little telescope at this very small sub-section of the rock scene. When I was introduced to bands like Opeth and Meshuggah, I went, 'Ah, this is where the innovation is happening – at the brutal end of metal.'" -Steven Wilson om att ingen vågade skapa nya sound längre.
5. Gravity Eyelids
Vacker låt som trots detta tillhör de låtar som inte är 5plus. Låten tar fart när det hårda gitarr-riffet kommer in. Svag 4:a (av 5).
6. Wedding Nails
Härlig fart i denna instrumentella låt. Snabba riff blandas med tyngre hårdrocksriff. Låten avslutas med Alien-kusliga ljudlandskap. Känns lite som att både Gravity Eyelids och Wedding Nails är med som motpoler till de mer radiovänliga Trains och Sound of Muzak. Ett av de svagare spåren, men ändå en självklar 3:a
"Sometimes however you will see certain songs to be co-credited such as 'Wedding Nails,' which I did with Richard Barbieri and 'Strip The Soul,' which I did with Colin Edwin. The reason why they are credited is because they came up with an integral part of the material. In fact, in both those cases the songs were developed from ideas they gave me. In the case of Richard, he gave me this bizarre electronic rhythm which is now in the middle of the song; in the case of Colin, he gave me this bass line which appears in the middle of the song. But having delivered those ideas as a starting point for these songs that was the end of the collaboration. It was like I needed them to be out of the room so I could continue writing and recording. That's the way I work. I found it very difficult to work together with people. I can work with Tim Bowness because Tim is a vocalist/lyricist, but musicians I find it very hard to collaborate with during the writing process. Don't ask me why but I find writing and recording rather a solitary discipline." -Steven Wilson
7. Prodigal
Tillbaka till Radio-vänligare ballad liknande proglåtar. Väldigt mycket Pink Floyd över sången. Sticket är så mycket Jimmy Page att det nästan blev en stämningsansökan (jag ljuger). Ett steg bättre än Wedding Nails och Gravity Eyelids.

Colin Edwin är så där mysigt mysig igen i intro delen av .3. Basriffet genomsyrar hela låten som är en uppenbar hyllning till 60-talets psykedelia.

Drivande basriff. Distad Steven Wilson. Ingen favoritvers hos mig. Ingen favoritlåt heller.
10. Chloroform
B-sida som hamnade på vinylutgåvan.
"The writing credit for Chloroform really is to do with the drum pattern. It inspired Steven to write the music and though it's Gavin playing, it's my melodic tom pattern and time change riff. It almost sounds like me actually playing but then Gavin would have no problem replicating any playing." -Chris Maitland (tidigare trummis i PT)
11. Heartattack in a Layby
Vacker låt. Lätt att glömma bort på en väldigt stark platta. Heartattack in a Layby handlar om ånger. Om att inte ta chansen när den kommer, att inte våga, om alla beslut som får en att tänka "om jag bara hade". I slutet av ditt liv är visar det sig att ditt liv är resultatet av besluten du tog och de du inte tog. Det kan du inte ändra på.
12. Strip the Soul
Om en ska tro det som skrivs på internet är detta en av fansens minst älskade låtar från In Absentia.
Serial Killer Psychology: The song's lyrics are written from the chilling perspective of a psychopath. The frontman, Steven Wilson, has stated that the track is an exploration of the minds of serial killers, wife-beaters, and child molesters—attempting to understand what causes a person to completely lose their humanity and empathy.
13. Collapse the Light Into Earth
En göra slut låt från Steven. Mycket vacker. Perfekt avslutning på plattan.
