Kommentarer: Yes är ett engelsk symfoniskt rockband som bildades 1968 i London, England av basisten Chris Squire och sångaren Jon Andersson. Yes är kända för sina komplexa instrumentala och vokala arrangemang där låtarna ofta är långa och progressiva. Squire och Peter Banks spelade ihop tidigt (The Syn och Mabel Greer's Toyshop tillsammans med Bill Bruford). Gruppen utvecklades till Yes och keyboardisten Tony Kaye anslöt. Yes har släppt 23 studioalbum, 31 livealbum, 4 Ep:s och 69 singlar genom åren och rankas av många som världens bästa progressiva rockband.

Heaven & Earth finns ej på Spotify så den är således inte med i denna lista...Jag har också valt att inte ta med några liveplattor eftersom det förmodligen skulle sluta med att varenda jäkla låt från diskografin skulle vara med på min best of. Det vill jag inte. Anyway. Enjoy!

Kommentar: Enter Rick Wakeman på keyboards. Sa någon trollkarlsmorgonrock? South Side of the Sky är en makalöst jäkla låt. Yes bästa?

"According to Jon Anderson, the inspiration for lyrics came from an article which claims that "sleep is death's little sister", and the lyrics expand on the idea that death could be beautiful. The mountain referenced in the lyrics is a goal humanity struggles to attain, after which there is death, a set of transitions leading to "eternal sleep or the next life span". -wikipedia

Kommentar: Första superba låten i Yes-katalogen.

"The psychedelic pop of the first album is gone, and while psychedelic pop is a style I tend to enjoy, it just wasn't Yes' thing. The Moody Bluesisms of Time and a Word didn't suit Yes well either...Yes turned into a full, balls-out prog rock band, and they became really, really good as a result." -finulanu

Kommentar: Jon Anderson och Rick Wakeman lämnar. Geoffrey Downes, keyboard och Trevor Horn, sång (båda från Buggles) ersätter. Tempus Fugit har varit en favorit sedan jag hörde den för första gången hemma hos min vän Jimi för 10-20 år sedan.

After Tormato, the boys seem almost unchained by Jon's absence (to say nothing of Rick), and proceed to unleash one of the most bone-crunchingly progressive albums in their catalog, and without a doubt the best album of 1980. He played the church organ that comes in near the end of the song - and he actually played it in a church. Kommentar: Yes var ett färdigt band från start. Det hade allting utstakat för dem själva. De visste exakt hur de ville låta och skulle låta under hela sin karriär. Allt började med albumet Yes för Bill Bruford, Jon Anderson, Chris Squire, Tony Kaye och Peter Banks. Debutplattan börjar med fantastiska  Beyond and Before och lika grymma I See You(Byrds). Det är först på femte låten Harold Land som jag reagerar på att det skulle vara i närheten av slätstruket utan att det på något sätt är dåligt.

Kommentar: Peter Banks ut och Steve Howe in. Kanonplatta givetvis med The Clap, Yours Is No Discrace, I've Seen All Good People, Starship Trooper, A Venture och Perpetual Change.

12. Låt: Roundabout

Kommentar: Jon och Steve skrev Roundabout tillsammans när de var på turne i Skottland. De hade hemlängtan och Jon skrev bland annat "Twenty four before my love you'll see I'll be there with you" vilken indikterade Jons saknad efter sin fru Jennifer. De satt bak i en van och beskrev landskapet de körde genom på väg hem till London från Skottland. Resultatet blir en psykedelisk hemresa om den engelska landsbygden. "In and around the lake" =Loch Ness och Nessie

"When we first heard the 'Roundabout' single, it was on the radio. We didn't know it was released. We were busy being a band on the road, and then we heard the edit and we thought, 'Wow, that must have been a big pair of scissors to edit that song.' I mean, it was just totally wrong musically. It actually worked and all of a sudden we became famous, we had a hit record and more people came to see us, which was great, because then they would see the progression of music we'd been doing and they'd see us more as a band and not just wait for 'Roundabout.' Kommentar: Lagom till att plattan släpptes i USA joinade Steve Howe bandet. Han spelar dock inte gitarr, utan det är fortsatt Peter Banks här. Många fina låtar även om det är direkt störigt med James Bond-orkesterskiten som ligger och skaver i bakgrunden. Finns många goa låtar här i Then, Everydays(Buffalo Springfield) m.fl.

"That durability is partly due to an inventive and frenzied drum part courtesy of Bill Bruford. Though a Yes member for a brief time in Yes' long history, Bruford had a habit of propelling the band in a way more conventional drummers would not. Kommentar: Magnification inleder plattan med samma namn på bästa sätt. Precis som på förra plattan The Ladder så fint gjorde. The Ladder hade dock ett gäng spår efter inledningsspåret som var direkt olyssningsbara. Spirit of Survival är låt två på Magnification och som tur var är även den rätt så bra, James Bond-temat/stråkarna till trots. Give Love Each Day är grande med sina stråkar och storfilmsmelodier. Det är lätt att glömma att det är Yes vi lyssnar på tills Chris Squires mullrande Tony Levin-inspirerade basspel kommer in och väcker oss ur drömmen.

"From a Page was sung by lead vocalist Benoît David, and three of the four tracks were written by keyboardist Oliver Wakeman, who also produced the album. The fourth track is credited to the whole band: Wakeman, David, bassist Chris Squire, drummer Alan White, and guitarist Steve Howe. Wakeman was dismissed in 2010 and David in 2011, and Squire died in 2015. So as part of the Yes catalog, these songs are anomalous, especially insofar as they were released out of chronological order." -patrickq

Kommentar: Close to the Edge innehåller bara tre låtar. Förvisso är det tre låtar med mindre spår i dem. Som tur är har spotify albumet som tre spår och detta innebär i sin tur att jag kan ta med hela platta på min best of. Oh the joy! Moon Safari har lyssnat!

18. Låt: The Revealing Science of God - Dance of the Dawn

Kommentar: Fyra låtar. Två cdskivor. Kortaste låten är 18 minuter lång. Prog? Alla är inte lika nöjda:

"Tales from Topographic Oceans must certainly be the band's nadir, although with a catalog as dire as theirs, it's hard to pick a low point. It's a long, long, eighty-one minute song broken into four sections (one per side on a double album back in the days of vinyl) which only have tenuous connections. The lyrics are Eastern mystical psychobabble, heavily weighed down by dragging tempos. As soon as a song gets almost fast enough to garner interest, the drums immediately slip away and we're stuck with Anderson warbling ethereally about mountains or birds.

19. Låt: City of Love

Kommentar: Owner of a Lonely Heart till trots, eller tack vare?, är 90125 en platta av sin tid. På gott och ont. Å ena sidan är det en suverän AOR-doftande skiva, å andra sidan låter det hemskt mycket 80-tal med plastiga instrument och slisk i överflöd. Jag måste erkänna att jag brukar ha väldigt svårt att lyssna på låtarna när själva soundet inte behagar mig, men jag försöker verkligen göra ett undantag här.

Owner of a Lonely Heart är dock svårt att vara ärlig kring. Är det bra eller anus? Låten har snurrat så många gånger i mitt huvud att det är svårt att tänka klart. Efterföljande Hold On doftar kokosolja och lyxjacht utanför Floridas kust. In a good way, alltså. It Can Happen Here låter som Another Brick in the Wall Pt 4. Changes låter som Scorpions.

Leave It, kittlar alla vars öron gottar sig i stämsång. City of Love är hård, och drar ibland till och med mot sentida King Crimsonhåll. 

20. Låt: Siberian Khatru

"it's an infectious, multi-faceted and diamond-edged gem that is a wonderful showcase for Squire's thundering bass, Howe's unique guitar style, Bruford's precise drumming, and the group's terrific harmony vocals. "Khatru" is a magnificent musical motivator, a great Saturday starter, and a likely choice to put your subwoofer "through its paces," and really get your heart pumping and your house shaking!" -progarchives.com

21. Låt: The Ancient - Giants Under the Sun

Kommentar: Prog i perfektion där varje låt snarare är en "movement" än en låt och där en upptäcker nya grejer varje gång man spelar den. Inte helt olikt Genesis längre låtar som tex. Supper's Ready. The Ancient - Giants Under the Sun är nog den knepigaste och därmed också den roligaste låten på plattan att lyssna på.

22. Låt: Future Times/Rejoice
Skiva: Tormato
Årtal: 1978
Kommentar: Tormenting tormato är Yes komprimerat till korta poplåtelängder, men med samma instrumenteringslängd/information. Resultatet blir minst sagt spretigt och jobbigt eftersom alla partier ska spelas under sånt kort tid. Ryckigt och hafsigt. Steve Howe solar hela låtarna för att han annars inte kan få med alla sina idéer i låtarna. Det känns som om de skrivit låtar som egentligen skulle varit 15 minuter långa, men sedan beslutat sig för att trimma bort det intressanta.

Brittisk folk, konstiga synthljud, ett mentalt trasigt band och ett platt ljud till trots så finns här några guldkorn. Inledande Future Times och Rejoice t.ex. Även följande Don't Kill The Whale och Madrigal är helt ok. Release, Release som avslutar a-sidan är dock alldeles för intensiv för att vara nyttig att lyssna på. Arriving UFO skickar kalla kårar längs min lekamen. Jösses vilken start på b-sidan...Och sen kommer Circus of Heaven. Jisses Kristus. Onward räddar skinnet någorlunda. Avslutande On the Silent Wings of Freedom är också ok.

"It's certainly better than Big Generator, but then again our family cat has vomited up better albums than Big Generator, so that's not really much of a stretch." -p_q

"As for side two, well the afore mentioned 'Sound Chaser' is bonkers, exhilarating, messy, brilliant and has rhythms so frenetically fast and choruses so insane (cha-cha-cha, cha-cha, indeed) that you'll ever love it or hate it. It goes absolutely everywhere in the space of its ten minutes, and it's a wild ride. Guitars go sky high and freak out, the keyboards shimmer and add sweet beauty to the chaos, the drums almost trip themselves over in their frenzy, and Jon Anderson sounds like he's on speed most of the time." -oceanrain

"There is a generous amount of '80s cheese here. Everything has a super slick sheen to it, and a lot of the synth tones (played mostly by Rabin) feel sterile. Despite all this, I'd recommend this album. The band show a sharp sense for what works in songwriting, and the music never overstays its welcome." -Casimir34

Kommentar: Tre sekunder in är detta en bättre skiva än Union. Det säger dock ingenting...The Calling, Real Love, Walls och avslutande Endless Dream funkar i krig. Endless Dream funkar i andra sammanhang också :)

Kommentar: Big Generator har ett gitarrljud som bara Meshuggah kan efterlikna. Men vad är det för jäkla skiva vi bjuds på? På riktigt? Shoot High, Aim Low (låter ju fan som Rush!) och Love Will Find A Way sticker ut. Positivt alltså.

Alltså, I'm Running!? På riktigt. Jag vill radera mitt minne!

"Until it came time to record the follow up. Anderson was trying to convince Rabin to loosen up his style, Kaye wanted things to sound a certain way and started bickering with Horn, Anderson and Squire were not seeing eye to eye, Rabin was writing with Stevie Nicks, and the recording process kept moving from studio to studio, with the band constantly at odds with each other, until Horn walked away from the whole sorry mess leaving Rabin and one of his mates to finish off the production job. Seemingly in the middle of it all was Alan White who seemingly quietly got on with the job of playing the drums and hoping that no one would suggest replacing him with a drum machine." -p_q

"Yes drummer Alan White wrote the passage at the beginning of this song, and lead singer Jon Anderson contributed some lyrics, but the song was primarily composed by Trevor Rabin, a South African songwriter/guitarist/producer who serendipitously became a member of Yes in 1982 when he teamed up with White and Chris Squire to form a band called Cinema. When they added Anderson to the lineup, they considered it a re-formed Yes, as White, Squire and Anderson were all former members. "The song opens with some mysterious synth and a bit of rain stick, setting the stark, deep-space stage for the adventure to come. Then we get Steve Howe's plucked guitar, bringing to mind a vision of beat-up spaceships limping through the stars like an interstellar wagon train. Anderson's high-pitched voice rings out, Chris Squire's defiant bass kicks in, and we're into Yes rock territory. Around the 1:50 mark the chorus begins, with Anderson's vocals swelling and the band's signature harmonic vocalising in the background.

Like many of Yes' longer classics, "Homeworld (The Ladder)" feels like several songs stitched together, almost a medley of sorts. At 4:13 there's a sudden shift, driven by the outstanding keyboard work of Igor Khoroshev. Finally, just as we think the song is over, at 7:52 we get this soft and sweet epilogue music on the comforts of home."

Kommentar: Lightning Strikes är rumba på julafton eller reggae från Lindingö. Fruktansvärt! Annars börjar plattan hyfsat med Homeworld (The Ladder). The Messenger är också ok.

Kommentar: Fasen vilken lökig skiva detta är. Pun intended...Året var förresten 1991, inte 1985. Yes är gubbiga redan för 19 år sedan alltså. Året för grunge, men Yes gräver sig ned i ett gryt fullt av turkosa synthar och lirar yacht-aor. Smart beslut...

Lift Me Up, Miracle of Life, Silent Talking, More We Live - Let Go och är lyssningsbara. 

"Oh yeah and there are eleven musicians listed who do whatever you do with a synthesizer. ELEVEN for shit sake. ELEVEN!" -rod45

Kommentar: Chris Squire (den enda kvarvarande originalmedlemmen) dog 2015. Alan White trummade inte längre (RIP 2022). Jon Anderson ersatt av Glass Hammers Jon Davison. Steve Howe, Geoffrey Downes, Billy Sherwood, Jay Schellen är övriga gubbar som lirar på plattan. 

Dare to Know, Leave Well Alone är ok.

Kommentar: Så här skrev jag på min best of 2023 om denna platta:

För det första. Det är INTE Jon Anderson som sjunger. Va? Jeesus. Jon Davison sköter sången och han låter faktiskt exakt som sin namne, om än något fragilare och något ljusare. Är det möjligt? Steve Howe lirar gura och det är ju som det ska vara. Annars är sig inte s´å mycket sig likt. Eller? Hade detta varit ett nytt band hade gemene man klagat på att det var Yes-kopior. Nu klagar istället folk på att det INTE låter som Yes. Det är väl exakt det, det gör? Cut From The Stars och All Connected inleder i varje fall plattan på ett bra sätt. Inga monsterlåtar, men det var det väl längesen som någon förväntade sig? på följande Luminosity vrider Jon Davidson åt kulorna så mycket att jag inte längre är säker på om det är han eller en tjej som sjunger. Här är också första gången som jag nickar till. Yes tråkar ut mig utan att för den delen vara dåliga på något sätt. Living Out Their Dream är dock aptrist. Inser att det är en dubbel som Yes tryckt i min famn. Jösses. Titelspåret härnäst och det maler på i 14 minuter. Episkt? Circle of Times, Unknown Place kunde de lämnat i skräpkorgen. Som tur var är andra-discen inte så lång.
